The founder of Kaptanoğlu Shipping Group, the deceased Hacı İsmail Kaptanoğlu is also one of the authors of Contemporary Turkish Maritime History.
İsmail Kaptanoğlu was born in 1913 as one of five sons of Mehmet Kaptanoğlu from Limankoy, Rize Cayeli (Mapavri) borough, delivering onions and potatoes and returning kerosene, sugar and flour in his tug between Poti and Batumi and Trabzon in the first quarter of the 20th century. Father Mehmet Kaptanoğlu sent his children to Istanbul to in pursuit of making a living when the living conditions in the region became more difficult in the post- World War I period. Allah blessed with members of Kaptanoğlu family with courage and strength. They are tall and sturdy people. And now İsmail Kaptanoğlu and his brothers transport grapes between Istanbul and Murefte Sarkoy with their gullets. Their office is the Selanik Kahvesi ( “ Thessaloniki Coffee House” ) located in Istanbul, Karakoy. The brothers believed that it was time for each one of them to run his own business in the post- World War II period. Each brother established his own company by sharing the fleet they owned. The vessel named “ Nil” remained at İsmail Kaptanoğlu. In 1954, he purchased 550 DWT tonnage İsmail Kaptanoğlu vessel and owned another 600 DWT tonnage vessel by purchasing the renowned Nusret Minelayer vessel in 1962. While İsmail Kaptanoğlu laying the sound foundation of Hacı İsmail Kaptanoğlu establishment on one hand, he pioneered the establishment of non- governmental organizations in the field as one of the pioneers of the Turkish Maritime on the other hand. As one of the founders of Shipowners Cooperative and Turkish Shipowners’ Association, Hacı İsmail Kaptanoğlu continued to act as the president of Shipowners Cooperative until his death. Passed in 1986, Hacı İsmail Kaptanoğlu is imbedded in the history as one of the most distinguished personalities of the Turkish Maritime world with his soft- heartedness behind the tough characteristic of the Black Sea public putting emphasis on friendship, adopting taking care of all problems of his employees as a duty, never stop attending to his business, paying strict attention to fulfilling the requirements of a social life, and placing his family as his life’ s top priority. After his long and happy relationship with his late wife Sabahat Kaptanoğlu, his sons Engin, Gündüz, Cengiz, Eser and his grandchildren and the children of his grandchildren continue to struggle for life with the tremendous responsibility of being worthy of him.
